Korean vs Western Astrology: Key Differences Explained

Compare Korean astrology (Saju, zodiac animals, Five Elements) with Western astrology (zodiac signs, planets, houses).

Foundation: Stars vs Elements

The most fundamental difference lies in what each system observes:

Western Astrology looks up at the sky — tracking the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets against the backdrop of 12 constellations (zodiac signs). Your birth chart maps where celestial bodies were at your exact moment of birth.

Korean Astrology (Saju) is rooted in the cyclical flow of time and the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). Rather than tracking planetary positions, Saju calculates the elemental energy of the year, month, day, and hour you were born using the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches system.

Birth Month vs Birth Year

When someone asks "What's your sign?" in the West, they're asking about your birth month (your Sun sign). In Korea, the equivalent question "무슨 띠야?" (What's your animal sign?) refers to your birth year.

Interestingly, both systems use 12 as their base number — but Western astrology cycles monthly while Korean astrology cycles yearly.

Why Not Both?

The beauty of exploring both systems is that they reveal different dimensions of who you are. Western astrology excels at describing personality through the lens of celestial archetypes, while Korean astrology provides a practical framework for understanding life timing and elemental balance.
